Golf is a game of precision, rhythm, and strategy, where true power comes from effortless motion and efficiency within our swing. More importantly, playing golf is also about longevity and staying healthy while doing it. Hi, I am Michael LaBella, an expert golf coach with over a decade of experience in performance golf coaching. I help golfers improve their skills and enjoy golf more so they can lower scores.
In this blog, my intention is to simplify the golf training process and help all levels of golfers adapt easily and improve their performance; let’s break down the golf performance essentials every golfer should know.
Unlocking Your Golf Performance Essentials
Golf is a game of skill, and your performance can be heightened through mastering your body's potential. By understanding and applying a few core principles, you can unlock a more efficient and powerful swing. These essential indicators will help you build a foundation for consistent, repeatable results, turning your natural raw talent into refined performance. Let's understand how to get ready for the golf game.
Maximize Distance with Clubhead Speed
Clubhead speed is one component to maximizing your distance, it is your engine behind powerful, consistent shots. But it’s not about swinging wildly; it’s about creating controlled speed. Here's how:
Widen your swing arc: First, you need to maximize the distance the clubhead travels without letting your hands get too far behind your body at the top of the swing.
Maintain proper wrist angles: Use your wrists to create a lever on the backswing and proper release through impact
Engage your lower body: “Ground Reaction Forces” and the proper sequencing of your lower body movement is the number one driver of clubhead speed development.
Rotate your core: Turn your torso back, getting to 90 degrees on the backswing will assist with speed development and will allow the club to shallow efficiently in transition.
Stay balanced: You have three balance points in the golf swing: address, top of your backswing, and post impact. Make sure in the address position you feel in a ready position on the balls of your feet, with your weight feeling roughly 50/50. At the top of the backswing your pressure favors your lead ball of foot and trail heel, and at the finish you’re able to hold a firm steady pose for the camera.

The Rhythm That Drives Consistency
Golf is as much about rhythm as it is about strength, think of snapping a towel, if I keep my arm and wrist rigid I will not be able to snap the towel as easily or as loud. If I was able to loosen up my arm and wrist and let it feel like I am one with the towel, I will be able to make it snap louder; thus the energy output is greater…. Efficient tempo and dynamic rhythm keep your swing balanced and repeatable. Here is how:
Proper Sequence: The swing is made up of a shift and a turn back, and then a shift and a turn on the way down
Start with a shift to the right in the takeaway: feel yourself stomp the ground on the trail side as you let the club flow back
Turn to the top: Once the club shaft is parallel to the ground turn to the top if the swing
“Turn to fall” into the shift to the target: As you finish your turn to the top you will “re-centering” or fall towards the target… some people will feel that they fall to this position and some will feel that they are using their trail leg to push to this position. It will feel like you’re in an elevator falling as you move to the target slightly. Your weight will be 50/50 at the top and by lead arm parallel down you will favor your lead leg.
Let your arms follow naturally; don't force the motion.
Tempo: When feeling quick, relax the arms and wrists, and count “one, and, two” one to the top, and at the top, and two at impact.
Kinematic Sequence: The Body’s Power Chain
Your body moves in a sequence: hips, torso, arms, then club. When this “kinematic sequence” is timed correctly, you can maximize efficiency and strike. How to balance it timely:
Start the downswing with your hips; they are the power engine.
Let your torso rotate next, pulling your arms along.
Your arms and hands follow, accelerating into impact.
The clubhead releases last, creating maximum speed.
Focus on feeling the chain reaction, not forcing it, just move with the flow.
Golf training with awareness and with the guidelines. This sequence ensures you’re getting the most out of your body in the right way, and that too without overexertion.
Efficiency and Injury Prevention
One of the most overlooked essentials of golf performance is injury prevention. Sometimes telling yourself to not rotate is what is actually causing the back pain. Every golfer needs to be aware of the do’s and don’ts. When I screen my players we look for match up’s that allow you to move more efficiently with your body's needs, not that picture perfect swing. As seen on the PGA Tour, not every swing looks the same, the players make swings based on what their body allows them to do. Our goal is to create a swing with no wasted movements in order to stop our body’s from making compensations that place more strain on us.
Prioritize flexibility: A mobile body is less prone to injury.
Strengthen your core: Your core supports your back and swing.
Warm up properly: Have a stretching routine before practice and play - all you need is 7 minutes.
Listen to your body: whenever you feel a sharp pain; stop immediately.
Focus on efficient movement: to avoid overexertion.
Working with a physical trainer or a biomechanist helps you understand what your body can handle and adapt your game accordingly. By focusing on efficiency, you can protect yourself from unnecessary injuries.
Why Proper Golf Training Matters
At MLab Golf at Butler Country Club, we run each of our players through a thorough assessment to understand each person's unique attributes and golf biomechanics. This allows us to tailor your golf swing to your needs based on what your body can, and cannot do, as well as what your body wants to do naturally. Each player is put through a Functional Movement Screen, a BioSwing Dynamics Assessment, and a Force Plate and Trackman video analysis.
We do not provide a band-aid fix which will eventually fall off and spiral downhill in later months. Our goal is to provide you with expert coaching and continued improvement. Ultimately, this approach helps you gain confidence, avoid injury, and truly enjoy the game for years to come.
Smarter Golf, Better Golf
With the right approach, every swing can be efficient, powerful, and safe. When you understand your body and refine your skills, you are enhancing your performance on the course. At MLab Golf at Butler Country Club in Pittsburgh, we will guide you to unlock your full potential.
